Why Maoism?

PRAC-Toronto has edited, annotated, and laid out Shashi Prakash’s essay “Why Maoism?”  Although we plan to eventually print and sell this booklet in order to raise operational funds for the group, we are presenting a draft PDF version here for those interesting in reading about the general theory of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism.

Note that some of the footnotes provide possible divergences in thought between some members of PRAC and Prakash, or at the very least points of debate.

Please note that “Why Maoism?” was originally published by the Rahul Foundation (Delhi, India) and “Why Maoism?” is part of a larger series that includes “Immortal Are the Flames of Proletarian Struggles”, by Deepayan Bose, and “Problems of Socialism, Capitalist Restoration and the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution”, also by Shashi Prakash.  Those interested in reading these other books, or finding out what other texts the Rahul Foundation prints, can email rahulfoundation@rediffmail.com

  1. Update: the original publishers of Prakash’s “Why Maoism?”, the Rahul Foundation, recently contacted us. Although they were most generous in their appraisal of the reprint and annotations, they gently pointed out that they would have preferred to have been informed ahead of time. For this oversight we apologize and self-criticize.

As a group we did discuss how we could seek permission but, based on the reprint we possessed at the time, we had no contact information and were largely unaware, aside from the author’s name, of the original publisher’s identity and contact information. It was decided, perhaps too quickly, to simply post an online version, but to not print any hardcopies until we could get permission. (Some members, it should be admitted, thought we should hold off on even the electronic copy.)

In any case, we are happy that the Rahul Foundation has contacted us and, regardless of our spurious electronic dissemination, is more than happy to allow us to continue the electronic dissemination as long as we add the appropriate information. We have added this information to the body of this page and to the PDF itself. We would like to thank the Rahul Foundation, and apologize again for toe-stepping, for their understanding and generosity in this matter.

  2. Page 10, first line: “The historical mission stated above was not propounded by Marx and Engels in some study room, but by living through, and participating in, the class struggles
    of their.”

I believe that the end of that sentence is missing.

    • This probably had to do with the lay-out editing: in the words cut off when it was being placed into the format it’s currently in. Obviously, the word after “their” is “time”, but thank-you for drawing our attention to this. If we get the time to re-edit the lay-out, we’ll make sure that word (along with other typos we’ve noticed, since every manuscript has at least one or two typos) is include.
